Somalia

According to The Economist, at independence Somalia was "in ethnic terms the most homogeneous country in sub-Saharan Africa". Despite also sharing a single language and religion, it is divided into more than 500 clans and sub-clans.

Somalis constitute the largest ethnic group in Somalia (85%).

Somalis are divided into two main clan families:

  • The Samaal, which includes the Darod, Isaaq, Hawiye
  • The Dir; and the Saab, which includes the Rahanweyn and Digil clans
  • and other smaller clan groups.
